Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal are set to make their mark as producers with their debut film, “Girls Will Be Girls,” which has been chosen to compete in the World Dramatic Feature category at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival 2024. This announcement marks a significant achievement for the Indian film industry, as “Girls Will Be Girls” stands as the sole Indian feature film selected for the festival.
Directed by Shuchi Talati, the film unfolds in a boarding school nestled in a small Himalayan hill town in northern India, revolving around the narrative of a 16-year-old girl named Mira. Chadha and Fazal, under their production banner Pushing Buttons Studios launched in March 2021, have passionately supported the film. The cast includes talents such as Kani Kusruti, Jitin Gulati, Preeti Panigrahi, and Kesav Binoy Kiron.
Expressing her excitement about the film’s selection, Richa Chadha stated, “Ali and I embarked on this production with a vision to tell unique stories. ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ making it to Sundance validates our commitment to compelling storytelling. We couldn’t be more thrilled.” She further emphasized the film’s journey as one of pushing boundaries and redefining narratives.
Ali Fazal described the Sundance selection as a “dream realized” and celebrated the film as a “celebration of storytelling.” The couple’s production venture, Blink Digital, has jointly produced “Girls Will Be Girls” alongside Crawling Angel Films and Dolce Vita Films.
As the film gears up for its Sundance debut, Chadha expressed optimism that the global audience will resonate with the film’s unique perspective and commendable performances from debutant actors. The selection not only showcases the talent of the cast and crew but also highlights the couple’s dedication to bringing diverse and compelling stories to the forefront of the cinematic world.
With its intriguing storyline set against the backdrop of a Himalayan town, “Girls Will Be Girls” promises to be a standout addition to the Sundance Film Festival’s 2024 lineup, representing a milestone in Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal’s journey as producers.
