Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty recently talked about a difficult time early in his acting career when a well-known reviewer sharply criticized his playing abilities and advised him to “go back to selling idli” after the release of his debut film. Shetty said that while the review affected him negatively, it also caused him to consider whether continuing an acting profession was the best choice for him.
On the show The BarberShop with Shantanu, Shetty said, “When my first film was released, one of the top critics said ‘He should go back to selling idlis’, and these are the words and this is his review: ‘He will never make it.’ The film was a blockbuster, my film was a hit. Suniel Shetty was accepted as that action hero, but here’s someone, the most powerful publication writing, saying go back home. I said ‘This is not fair’ because every kid believes that he is the next Mr, Bachchan.”
The actor made his debut when he was 31 years old with the film Balwaan opposite Divya Bharti. The film was helmed by Deepak Anand. Shetty added, “When I analyzed it, I had done six days of acting school. No drama, no play. I was just one tree in school in that one play. He was very harsh, which he did not need to be. But then when I went back, I said ‘maybe this career might not go anywhere, so let me stay invested in business because you need a backup.’” On the work front, Shetty was recently seen on the web shows Dharavi Bank and Hunterr: Tootega Nahi Todega.
