On picket lines, Hollywood celebrities join writers.
Striking For the first time in 63 years, Hollywood actors joined film and television writers on picket lines outside major studios on Friday, clapping and yelling for better streaming-era pay and limits on the use of artificial intelligence. Actors marched outside the offices of Netflix Inc, Paramount Global, and other corporations in New York and Los Angeles, demanding more pay for working-class actors and other advances. “We’re in an old contract for a new type of business, and it’s just not working for most people,” actor Susan Sarandon told Reuters outside Warner Bros Discovery offices.
What the AMPTP said
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) announced that it had increased compensation for SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA) members significantly. AMPTP is the organization that bargains on behalf of Netflix, Walt Disney Company, and other studios. According to Reuters sources close to the studios, the companies are going through a difficult period. After spending billions of dollars on programming to entice users, many streaming services have failed to earn a profit.
