Rajkumar Hirani’s latest directorial venture, “Dunki,” starring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu, has garnered attention for crossing the ₹320 crore mark at the global box office. Jointly presented by JIO Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani Films, the film achieved this milestone, as announced by Red Chillies Entertainment’s official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter). The celebratory poster shared by the production house hailed the film’s success, stating a global box office collection of 323.77 crores. The accompanying caption expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and support received for “Dunki,” quoting, “Nikle the kabhi hum ghar se… seedhe aapke dil mein pahoch gaye (We started from home some day… went straight to your hearts)!”
The narrative of “Dunki” revolves around the aspirations of four friends – Manu, Sukhi, Buggu, and Balli – aiming to build a better life in London. However, their journey towards this dream involves navigating an arduous yet transformative path. Released on December 21, “Dunki” encountered a box office clash with Prabhas-starrer “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire,” prompting a competitive environment for audience attention. Delving into the theme of illegal immigration through the technique known as ‘donkey flight,’ the film presents a heartfelt blend of comedy and drama.
Alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu, “Dunki” boasts a stellar cast featuring Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, Vikram Kochhar, and Anil Grover. Crafted as a narrative that encapsulates friendships, boundaries, nostalgia for home, and love, the film is penned by Rajkumar Hirani in collaboration with Abhijaat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon.
For Shah Rukh Khan, “Dunki” marks the third and final release of 2023 following the consecutive successes of action-packed blockbusters, “Pathaan” and “Jawan.” Despite earning decent box office numbers, “Dunki” failed to generate the same level of buzz as its predecessor blockbusters. The film encountered a spectrum of reviews from both critics and audiences, opening to a mixed reception. Notably, it recently gained attention for its screening at Rashtrapati Bhavan, adding a prestigious milestone to its journey.
