Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra joyously celebrated the 100-day milestone of his recent directorial venture, “12th Fail,” during a special event attended by the film’s cast and crew. Despite being available for streaming on OTT platforms, the movie’s success in theaters was acknowledged, and the team gathered to reflect on the journey and embrace the film’s theme of “restart.”
Adapted from Anurag Pathak’s book, “12th Fail” narrates the inspiring story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who triumphed over severe poverty to achieve the prestigious position of an IPS officer. The film highlights his remarkable journey and the pivotal role played by his wife, IRS officer Shraddha Joshi, in his ascent.
Vikrant Massey portrayed the character of Manoj, while Medha Shankar depicted Shraddha in the film. During the celebratory event, Vidhu Vinod Chopra engaged in a conversation with Vikrant, who inquired about his reflections on the movie after 100 days.
Chopra reminisced about the film’s humble beginnings, recalling how he was discouraged by many, including his wife Anupama Chopra, a film critic, who suggested releasing it on OTT. The filmmaker revealed that trade agencies predicted an opening of a mere Rs 2 lakhs and a lifetime business of Rs 30 lakhs. Undeterred, Chopra believed in the film’s potential and invested his own resources into its production, marketing, and release.
Despite a modest opening, Chopra expressed satisfaction, emphasizing the importance of a film’s intention and honesty in reaching audiences. Addressing a packed audience of film students and media, he proudly stated, “Look at where we are now,” eliciting applause from the auditorium.
Anupama Chopra, also present at the event, admitted to her initial skepticism about the film’s success. She acknowledged her husband’s foresight and dedication, publicly stating, “I was wrong, and you are right,” attributing the film’s success to the collective efforts of the team.
